What is colostrum, actually?

Colostrum went from a niche item known to athletes and nutrition obsessives to a shelf standard in about a year. What it is: the thick first fluid a mammal produces in the days after birth. Its job is not general nutrition — it exists to hand a newborn a working immune toolkit (immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, cytokines, growth factors) before that newborn can build its own.†

The question the boom skipped: colostrum from which animal? Nearly every label says bovine. The category standardized on cows for reasons of supply, not biology — there are a lot of dairy cows, and cow colostrum is cheap and easy to source at volume.

Why does the source animal matter?

How is colostrum dried, and why does it matter?

Colostrum arrives as a liquid and reaches you as a powder. Everything in between is where quality is won or lost, because the bioactives are heat-sensitive. Dry it aggressively and you are left with an expensive protein powder that has lost the thing you paid for.

Do the baby goats get theirs first?

Kids need their mother's colostrum to start their own immune systems, and they get it. Mt. Capra harvests only the surplus — what remains after the kids have had full access. There is no version of this business worth running that works the other way around.
